Titan – Two Funs of Fun
I think the name says it all. He is 100% puppy through and through. It has been a long time since we’ve had a puppy around and we had forgotten how much fun they can be! Lots of work, but lots of fun too.
Titan came into our lives when he was 3 ½ months old. He is the first Great Dane we actually purchased from a breeder. We prefer to rescue our Danes or to get them through private surrenders, but he came into our lives for a reason. Our senior Danes were really starting to slow down. The two of them would simply lie around the house, eat when they were hungry, but had no ambition to get up and exercise. As we all know, this can be very unhealthy for seniors. It tends to age them quickly and allows them to gain un-necessary weight. Neither are good for any dog, but especially seniors.
Now that Titan has come into the lives of Zoe & Noah, both have regressed to puppy hood again. It is a great sight to see them up and moving, protecting their territories, playing with their little brother like Giant Puppies. They have both lost about 10 lbs. This is a very good thing in their cases.
Titan is built like a tree trunk. He is just over a year old now and is a very strong, lean puppy machine. The first thing we noticed about Titan was his enormous paws. I mean it. He is our 4th Dane, and we all know they all have big feet, but his are HUGE. There is a picture shown in his gallery here, that is his foot beside a size 7 human foot. May I remind you that picture was taken at about 5 months old. We keep thinking he will grow into his feet, but they seem to grow with him. It is a known fact that Great Dane puppies go through growing spurts. It really is amazing to watch. I call it getting “all jacked up.” The front end grows, causing a bit of an uneven looking Dane. Then the next day you realize the back end has caught up. It is kind of like watching a see saw going up and down. Amazing how they grow! We like to compare growth to a railing inside our pool enclosure. Pick something around you house or yard and see where your puppy stands when you first get them. Then watch the growth spurts in comparison to that item. He is just over a year old now and weighs in at about 145lbs. He is going to be a very big boy.
Another amazing feature Titan has are his ears. I could not even imagine cropping those ears. They have natural strength in the cartilage. He can make them do “radar” or “periscope” type maneuvers and it just cracks us up. It really defines his personality. You can tell exactly what he is thinking by how his ears move. He has this incredibly cute face, huge eyes that show lots of different expressions. I am not a fan of cropping and could not imagine changing the natural beauty that God gave these creatures. I know this will strike a cord among Great Dane lovers, but it is just my choice. To crop or not to crop, that is a discussion I will not get into here. It is a choice every Great Dane owner has to make on their own.
Remember to do your research before considering a puppy of any breed. Great Dane puppies can be quite a handful. You have to know if you have the time and dedication required to take on the chore of a Great Dane puppy. Obviously, they have the same traits most puppies have, but remember their size, strength and energy level, allows them to be a bit more of a liability then other breeds. They can literally eat a piece of furniture, wall (as seen in his gallery above), or do a considerable amount of damage in a very short period of time. When teething, watch out! If it is Dane range, it is fair Dane. We choose crating while training. It is in their best interest as well as yours. It prevents them from causing harm to themselves or your home. Again, this is one of the topics every Great Dane owner has to decide on their own, but in most cases, your Danes’ actions will help you decide very quickly. We used a homemade crate that measures 5×7 feet. It is more like a condo to a Great Dane puppy.
Titan will be the patriarch of our Raising Danes Sanctuary one day. He loves it there and already knows he will be the king of the pack. Watch us all grow together! It will be two tons of fun for sure!
